Tuesday Morning Recap

Tuesday we discussed Psalm 23:3

“…he restores my soul. He leads me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.”

What does it mean to have your soul restored?

Andrew said that his soul is restored as he takes his focus off himself and places it on God. Soul restoration requires more than physical rest, although rest is certainly important, it requires seeking what we most desperately need – fellowship with God.

Bob added that restoration is not a one time thing – like becoming a Christian. True restoration is a process that requires many visits with the shepherd. Jed said that soul restoration is like restoring a dry and weathered piece of furniture. The piece is renewed as the carpenter applies oil and works it into the wood. The master transforms what looked like trash into a beautiful piece of furniture.

Grady advised that true restoration leads to righteous living. Those who have been restored reflect the essence of the shepherd. Doing what pleases the shepherd not only becomes easier it becomes the desire of our heart.

How can we we stay on the path of righteousness?

Sam said we must accept the fact that God is God and we are not. If we insist, even a little, on having our own way we cannot stay on the right path. Righteous living requires total surrender to God.

Dan opined that staying on tract means being obedient to God’s commands.  For example, we can only have peace about our finances if obey God’s teaching in regard to money.

I added that staying on the right path is not about avoiding things I know are harmful but embracing what is good for me. The longer I live the more aware I become of how easy it is to stray from the shepherd. Therefore, I need to be intentional about being regular in my church attendance, fellowship with Christian friends and time in the word.

Next week verse four.

1) What is the “valley of the shadow of death” and how can we have David’s courage as we walk through it?

2) What are the Lord’s rod and staff and how do they provide comfort?

3) What would change about your life if you applied this verse?

See you Tuesday.
