Tuesday Morning Recap

Gentlemen,

Tuesday we began a series on John the Baptist. Our first text was Matthew 3:1-11.

“But when he (John) saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming for baptism, he said to them, ‘You brood of vipers!  Who warned you to flee the wrath to come?”

What was John’s message?

Messiah was coming and He would issue in the kingdom of God. This kingdom would be unlike what the religious people of the time expected. The Pharisees and Sadducees were expecting a Jewish king who would throw out the Romans and reestablish Jewish rule. John tells them “…do not presume to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father; for I tell you, God is able from these stones to raise up children to Abraham.”

Jed said that John preached a message of repentance, a complete change from the way people thought about God.

Bob added that John baptized with water but Messiah would baptize with the Holy Spirit.  God’s salvation would be available to all.

Why was John so harsh to the Pharisees and Sadducees?

Imagine you are 200 pounds overweight. You know you need to lose weight so you go to a doctor. Do you want a doctor who will tell you what you want to hear or one who will tell you the truth?  A doctor who tells you what you what to hear makes you feel good but isn’t going to save your life. You need someone who will tell you the truth and help you get to a healthy weight — you are in trouble and if you don’t make a radical change you will die.

The religious leaders believed that their ancestry and the law saved them — they were overweight and needed a radical change. Sometimes we need to hear the truth, even if it hurts.

Next week John 1:19-34. Consider the following questions:

1) Why did the Jews send messengers to question John?

2) What answer does John give as to why he is baptizing?

3) Why does John call Jesus the ‘Lamb of God?’

See you Tuesday.

John
