10 Alive Recap

Friends,

Sunday we discussed chapter one of ‘Enough — Discovering Joy Through Simplicity and Generosity,’ ¬†‘When Dreams Become Nightmares.’

Author, Adam Hamilton, describes two conditions that permeate American culture — affluence and credit-itis. Individually and collectively we are living beyond our means. We can’t experience the life God wants for us if we are anxious about our finances.

1) Why is it so difficult to be generous?

Anne pointed out that we have an amazing ability to justify ourselves. We want to spend ‘our’ money the way we want and we don’t want anybody to get in our way.

Chris reminded us that ¬†King David, a man after God’s own heart, deceived himself into believing he could get away with murder.

Madison Avenue sends us messages that conflict with God’s teaching about money. Slogans like “Because your worth it ,” “You deserve a break today ,” and “Indulge yourself” dominate the airwaves and print media. It can appear that failing to spend on yourself is almost un-American.

2) How can we become more generous?

Eric said that we must first recognize that the messages of our culture are often at odds with God’s word.

We must discover our hearts desire. What do we find it easy to spend money on? What activities are easy to justify? What thoughts and fantasies dominate our minds? These questions will help us find the thing that is most important to us.

A famous man once opined that you can’t deny your hearts desire you must replace it with a new love. We fall in love with God as we spend time with Him. There are many ways to do this. Laurie advised that we should surround ourselves with Christian friends who will confront us when we stray.

Tom stressed the importance of staying in God’s word.

We all agreed that we need to participate in small groups that are intentional about studying Christian topics.

We need to remind ourselves that the Christian life is a journey. It takes time and effort. I’m blessed to be on this journey with all of you.

Next week chapter two — ‘Wisdom and Finace’

See you Sunday.

John
