Tuesday Morning Recap

Tuesday we continued our series on the difficult sayings of Jesus with a discussion of casting out demons. Our text was Mark 3:22-30.

1) What did the scribes accuse Jesus of doing?

“He is possessed by Beelzebul, and by the prince of demons he casts out the demons.”

Aubie said that Jesus is being accused of being demon possessed. They claim that he is able to cast out demons  because He is in league with Satan. They are witnessing the highest evidence that Jesus is the Christ and rather than acknowledging Him they claim He is in league with the devil.

We discussed why we don’t see demon possessed people today.

Bob suggested that there may be just as many demon possessed people today as there were in Jesus time but we no longer recognize them as being possessed. We give medical and physiological labels to people who are possessed. Just because we don’t recognize demon possession doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist.

I shared an experience David had with a friend who had become an alcoholic. The friend was drinking constantly and had reached the point where he had to be hospitalized. David and his wife Susan arrived at the man’s home with the intention of getting the man into a rehab facility. David’s friend wore hearing aids but did not have them in when David and Susan arrived. Susan found it strange that they were able to converse with him without his hearing aids. She also noticed that his voice was different. His voice was high pitched and whiny. He was pleading with them to leave him alone. David and Susan recognized that the man was possessed. They prayed  that the demon be cast out. The next day the man awoke in his right mind and has not had a drink sense.

2) What was Jesus response?

Jesus said that he can only cast out demons because he has defeated Satan.

David said that a few years ago he would not have been able to recognize the situation with his friend for what it was, however, as he has grown in his faith he has developed the ability to recognize the work of Satan. David added that we must remember that demons are afraid of us. Christ had the power to cast out demons and he has given us the same authority.

We also discussed the unpardonable sin. This is a condition that comes from rejecting Christ so often that the person loses the ability to accept Christ.

Next week Matthew 23:27-32. Consider the following questions:

1) Why does Jesus call the scribes and Pharisees hypocrites?

2) What would be the contemporary application of this teaching?

See you Tuesday.
