Wednesday Night Recap

Wednesday we continued our series on David’s sin with a discussion of Psalm 51.

“Against thee, and thee only, have I sinned, and done that which is evil in thy sight…”

1) Why does David feel that God is the only one David sinned against?

Chris noted that sin is a crime against God. He is the sovereign who has been offended. That is not to say that others haven’t been harmed by David’s actions. Uriah, Bathsheba, the unborn child and the Jewish people all suffered but David’s sin is an offence against God alone.

Jim added that this is a truth David learned years before but had forgotten or ignored as he fell further into sin.

2) What was the thing David couldn’t bear?

“Cast me not away from thy presence, and take not thy Holy Spirit from me.”

Jack said the thing David feared most was losing God. How different from what most fear. Many would say “take my relationship with God but leave the stuff.” David understood that our lives on earth were are just a mist. We were built for eternity —  If we lose God we lose evrything.

3) What is the only sacrifice acceptable to God?

“The sacrifice acceptable to God is a broken spirit and contrite heart.”

True humility is difficult to achieve. It comes only after we have been broken. We must come to a place where we have no allusions about our ability to control events.

Julie reminded us that Peter “broke” when he met Jesus eyes after Peter had denied Jesus.

Christ’s sacrifice transforms our hearts — if we will allow it.

Next week. 2 Samuel 13. Consider the following questions:

1) Why was Absalom upset with his father?

2) Were Absalom’s actions justified?

3) What do these events have to do with David’s sin?

See you Wednesday.
