Wednesday Night Recap

Friends,

Wednesday we continued our discussion of the prayers of Jesus. Our text was John 17:6-19.

“I do not pray that thou shouldst take them out of the world, but that thou shouldst keep them from the evil one.”

1) What is the essence of this prayer?

Chris noted that one of the main points Jesus wants to get across is that the purpose of our lives is to glorify God. Jesus prayed”…all mine are thine, and thine are mine, and I am glorified in them.” When we live in accordance with God’s will for our lives we bring glory to God. Therefore, the focus of our prayer lives should be to ask God to make His will clear to us.

Many pointed out the contrast between the world and believers. Jesus makes clear that the values of the world are at odds with God’s values.

2) What most surprised you about the prayer?

Some said they were struck by Jesus reference to the evil one. Jesus request that we be given protection from the devil. Clearly the devil wants to destroy God’s people. I don’t think we realize how active Satan is in the world today. We would be wise to pray the Lord’s protection from the devil’s schemes.

It is also significant that Jesus tells us we will have to show His love to a world that hates us. It is not easy to be a follower of Christ. We will face adversity. Jesus never promised it would be easy but that it would be worth it.

Next week John 17:20-26. Consider the following questions:

1) If you took this prayer seriously what would change about your life?

2) What is the greatest gift God can give you?

See you Wednesday.

John
