Tuesday Morning Recap

Gentlemen,

Next Tuesday night we will gather at Zeke’s cabin for some good food and fellowship.  I Look forward to seeing you there.

Tuesday we continued our look at the difficult sayings of Jesus with a discussion of Nicodimus’ visit to Jesus.

1) Why did Nicodemus come to Jesus at night?

Jed said that Nicodemus was curious about Jesus and wanted to learn more. However, Nicodemus didn’t want his peers to know about his curiosity.

Bob noted that unlike those who sought to trap Jesus Nicodimus was an honest seeker. He just wasn’t confident enough to talk to Jesus in public.

Chic said that perhaps Nicodemus simply wanted uninterrupted time with Jesus.

2) Before Nicodemus talked with Jesus what would Nicodemus have said was the way to heaven.

Terry said that the Jews believed that only those who followed the law could get to heaven.

Paul thought it ironic that Nicodemus was a teacher and so ignorant about the Old Testament. Jesus tells Nicodemus “Your Israel’s teacher and you don’t understand this?”

3) What does it mean to be born again?

Jesus uses the analogy of physical birth. Unless a woman’s egg is fertilized it is just dead tissue and passes through her body. However, if a seed from outside fertilizes the egg then life begins.

In the same way spiritual life begins when the Holy Spirit enters us and brings us to life spiritually. Without this new life we remain dead in our sin.

Dan L. said that we receive the Holy Spirit when we believe and trust in Jesus.

The only intellectually honest reason to deny the gospel is that it is to good to be true.

Next week Acts 1:1-11. Consider the following questions:

1) What is the restoration of Israel and when will it come?

2) What is the purpose of the church?

3) Are we fulfilling our purpose?

See you Tuesday.

John
