10 Alive Recap

Sunday we began a new series on Jonah. Our text was Jonah chapter one.

1) What did God ask Jonah to do?

“Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry against it; for their wickedness has come before me.”

Jonah was to go and preach the gospel to the Nenevites. God wanted them to repent and be saved.

2) Why doesn’t Jonah obey God?

Eric said that Jonah didn’t like Nineveh. They were enemies to his people. Jonah didn’t want them to be saved. Truth be told Jonah wanted them to be destroyed.

We discussed how difficult it can be to reach out in love to those who have harmed us. Like Jonah we don’t want God to give them a second chance. Tom noted that we want forgiveness for ourselves and vengeance for our enimies. But God’s mercy extends to all.

3) Why did God send the storm?

Jonah wasn’t obeying God so God needed to get Jonah’s attention. After class my mother-in-law remarked that it is foolish to think we can out run God.

Jack said that God brings storms into our lives not to punish but to discipline. Like a loving father He wants us to walk in accordance with His good and perfect will for our lives. He loves us too much to let us disobey Him.

When we find ourselves in the midst of a storm we should ask if there is something for which we need to repent.

Next week Jonah 2. Consider the following questions:

1) What does Jonah learn?

2) What is the application for us?

See you Sunday.
