10 Alive Recap

Friends,

I appreciate dad leading class while I was out of town. I’m sure you had a great discussion.

Next Sunday we will continue our discussion of Jesus’ healings. Our text will be Mark 5:1-20. Consider the following questions:

1) Is demon possession real?

2) Why do the people want Jesus to go away?

3) How does the man respond to the healing?

See you Sunday.

Wednesday Night Recap

Friends,

Wednesday we discussed Paul’s prayer for the Thessalonians. Our text was 2 Thessilonians ¬†1:3-4

1) What is the  connection between faith and love?

Paul writes that as faith increases love also increases. (more…)

Tuesday Morning Recap

Gentlemen,

Tuesday we continued our series on Galatians with a discussion of chapter 2:1-14.

We discussed why Paul confronted Peter and what gave Paul the authority to confront Peter.

Paul and Peter were both apostles so why was Paul able to correct Peter? Bob noted that Peter was wrong. Peter would eat with the gentiles except when the Jews were present. Bob noted that God had made clear to Peter that the gospel was for all. Therefore, when Paul corrects Peter Paul is not relying on his apostolic authority but on the authority of the word. (more…)

10 Alive Recap

Friends,

Sunday we started a new series on Jesus healings. Our text was John 9.

1) Why do the disciples assume the man was born blind?

They assume the blindness is the result of sin. 1st century jews believed that disease was a punishment from God for unconfessed sin. We discussed how the world often echoes this belief — ‘what comes around goes around.’ This philosophy also leads some, even some Christians, to believe that if they are good bad things shouldn’t happen to them. (more…)

Wednesday Night Recap

Friends,

Wednesday we discussed Paul’s prayer for the Colossians.

“And so, from the day we heard, we have not ceased to pray for you, asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, so as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in knowledge of God.”

1) What is the purpose of your life?

We are to grow in the knowledge of God and live lives pleasing to God. (more…)

Tuesday Morning Recap

Gentlemen,

Tuesday we began a new series on Paul’s letter to the Galatians. Our text was Galatians 1:1-24.

“Paul, an apostle –not from men nor through man, but through Jesus Christ and God the Father, who raised him from the dead…..”

1) What was the source of Paul’s teaching?

Bob noted that this is a critical question because Paul writes that the gospel he preaches is absolutely true.

“But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you let him be accursed.”

Paul goes to great lengths to establish that his knowledge comes from God alone. The Galatians reject this truth at their peril. (more…)

10 Alive Recap

Friends,

Sunday we finished our Jonah series.

1) What lesson does Jonah learn?

Robyn noted that at the end of the book we find Jonah as we did at the beginning — complaining. She wonders if he has learned anything.

We agreed that if we aren’t careful we can be like Jonah. We are quick to complain when things aren’t going the way we want. We expect God to quickly meet our needs but are full of excuses when He calls on us to do something. (more…)

Wednesday Night Recap

Friends,

Wednesday we continued our study of prayer with a discussion of Ephesians 1:15-23.

“I have not stopped giving thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers. I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit os wisdom and revelation so that you may know him better. I pray also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is like the working of his mighty strength, which he extended in Christ when he raised him from the dead…”

1) What does Paul pray that God grant the Ephesians? (more…)

Tuesday Morning Recap

Gentlemen,

Tuesday we concluded our series on 2 Timothy. I think this study resulted in some of our best discussions. I hope you agree.

Tuesday we talked about chapter 4:9-22.

1) What does this passage teach us about the Christian life?

Bob noted that Paul was very involved in the lives of his fellow Christians. This shows us that you can’t be a ‘Lone Wolf’ Christian. Christian community is essential to becoming the people God intends. (more…)

10 Alive Recap

Friends,

Sunday we continued our Jonah series with a discussion of Jonah 4:1-5.

“But it displeased Jonah exceedingly, and he was angry…”

1) Why doesn’t Jonah want the Ninevites to repent?

Jonah doesn’t like the Ninevites. He believes they are sinful and not worthy of God’s grace. (more…)
