Tuesday Morning Recap

Gentlemen,

Tuesday we continued our Galatians series with a discussion of 3:1-5.

1) What mistake are the Galatians making?

They are toying with the idea that they can mingle works and grace. Paul makes clear that this is an issue on which there can be no compromise. Salvation comes from faith alone in Christ alone.

Jed points out that if Paul had yielded on this point the Church would have died out. If we believe we can save ourselves then we  have no need for a savior.

Grady said that when we rely solely on the grace of God He can work out is good and perfect purpose in our lives. Paul knew that if people relied on their own good works they would either become self righteous or guilt ridden.

2) What difference does this concept make to our spiritual growth?

When we came to a saving faith in Christ His Spirit came to live in our hearts. The Spirit wants to conform us into the image of Christ.

We had a good discussion about fundamentalism. Some say that the problem with the world is fundamentalists. Of course that is a ‘fundamentalist’ statement. The problem is not fundamentalism. Most of the great advances in history have been brought about by fundamentalists. The real issue is what are you sold out for. If it is Christ then you will love and serve as He loved and served. We all agreed that if there were more Christians the world would be a better place.

Next week Galatians 3:7-9. Consider the following questions:

1) Why does Paul believe we are children of Abraham?

2) How were the People of Abrahams time saved?

See you Tuesday.

John
