Gentlemen,

Tuesday we discussed chapter four of ‘Forgotten God’ — ‘Why do you want Him?’

Chan relates an experience where a man dying of cancer asked the church elders to anoint him with oil and pray for his healing. Before they began Chan asked the man a question — “Why do you want to be healed? Why do you want to stay on this earth?” Chan believes that our desire to live should be for the sake and glory of the God who put us on this earth in the first place. (more…)

Friends,

Sunday, October 7, we will begin a new series based on Francis Chan’s book  ‘Crazy Love.’ We will be purchasing books with class funds. I think this will be a great study and encourage you to participate and to invite a friend.

Dad will be leading class Sunday as Jamie and I will be out of town.

Wednesday we continued our study of James with a discussion of Lesson Eleven — ‘The Rewards of Perseverance’

“You too, must be patient. Do not give up hope, because the Lord is coming soon.”

1) Why should believers be motivated to patiently endure?

Bonnie said that Christians know they are going to heaven. This allows them to endure the sufferings of this world. (more…)

1) How do people oppress others for personal gain?

Judy said that our culture rewards winners. We want to be on the winning team and, if we aren’t careful, we aren’t too particular about how we win. (more…)

Gentlemen,

Tuesday we continued our discussion of ‘Forgotten God’ with a discussion of chapter two — ‘What Are You Afraid Of?’

We discussed two main fears:

1) What if God doesn’t come through?

What if we pray for the Holy Spirit and nothing happens? It is scary to pray boldly for change and then nothing happens. Maybe we aren’t worthy or we aren’t spiritual enough. (more…)

Sunday we concluded our series on Jesus’ healings. For the next two weeks we Katy Anderson will share her experiences from her recent mission trip to Korea.

Sunday we discussed Peter and John’s healing of the crippled man.

‘I have no silver and gold, but I give you what I have; in the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk.”

Our discussion centered on the fact that healings of this type were common place in the first century. However, they don’t seem as common today. (more…)

Wednesday we continued our series on James with a discussion of Lesson Nine — The Dangers of Pride.

1) What is the danger of judging others?

Judy said that when we judge others we diminish ourselves. Our focus is on how others have faltered or not lived up to our expectations. This focus may make us feel superior for a time but inevitably leaves us feeling empty. (more…)

 

Tuesday Morning Recap

Gentlemen,

Tuesday we began a new series based on the book ‘Forgotten God’ by Francis Chan. We will have books at class on Tuesday for those who haven’t had a chance to buy one.

Tuesday we discussed the introduction and chapter one.

The book is about the Holy Spirit and the role the Spirit should play in the life of the believer. In the introduction Chan writes:

“Reading this book probably won’t be easy. No matter what religious tradition you come from, you likely carry baggage and harbor stereotypes when it comes to the Holy Spirit. It’s going to require laying aside your baggage and stereotypes so you can be open to what God wants to teach you. Are you willing to do that?” p. 19 (more…)

Sunday we continued our series on Jesus’ healings with a discussion of Luke 18:35-43.

1) Why wouldn’t the blind man stop crying out and why did the crowd try to silence him?

Chris said that the blind man was desperately wanted healing. He wasn’t going to let anything or anyone prevent him from getting to Jesus. Chris added that we act the same way when we are desperate. (more…)
