Tuesday Morning Recap

Gentlemen,

Tuesday we began a new series based on the book ‘Forgotten God’ by Francis Chan. We will have books at class on Tuesday for those who haven’t had a chance to buy one.

Tuesday we discussed the introduction and chapter one.

The book is about the Holy Spirit and the role the Spirit should play in the life of the believer. In the introduction Chan writes:

“Reading this book probably won’t be easy. No matter what religious tradition you come from, you likely carry baggage and harbor stereotypes when it comes to the Holy Spirit. It’s going to require laying aside your baggage and stereotypes so you can be open to what God wants to teach you. Are you willing to do that?” p. 19

In chapter one Chan relates an encounter with two Jehovah’s Witnesses. Their beliefs about Jesus were based on what they had been taught about Him not on what God’s word taught. Chan confronted them with what the Bible said about Jesus Christ. Chan challenged them to reexamine their preconceived ideas about Jesus. After they left Chan realized that his beliefs about the Holy Spirit were largely based on what he had been taught rather than on what the Bible taught. He decided to conform his view of the Spirit to what the Bible taught.

Chan writes “I want to consistently live with an awareness of His (the Holy Spirit’s) strength. I want to be different today from what I was yesterday as the fruit of the Spirit becomes manifest in me.”

Next week chapter two — What Are You Afraid Of?

See you Tuesday.

John
