10 Alive Recap

Sunday we discussed chapter four of ‘Crazy Love’ – ‘Profile of the Lukewarm’

“It is not scientific doubt, not atheism, not pantheism, not agnosticism, that in our day and in this land is likely to quench the light of the gospel. It is a proud, sensuous, selfish, luxurious, church-going, hollow-hearted prosperity.” p 65

Chan argues that Jesus was not interested in those who fake it and the modern church should reject passive Christianity.

We must ask ourselves if we are in good soil. The seed planted in good soil becomes a plant that produces good fruit.

Chan listed characteristics of lukewarm people.

– They give their money as long as doesn’t impinge on their standard of living.

– They choose what is popular over what is right.

– They don’t want to be saved from their sin but from the penalty of their sin.

– They like stories about people who do radical things but they don’t want to act.

– They rarely share their faith.

– They gauge their morality by comparing themselves to the secular world.

– They say they love Jesus but don’t submit to Him.

– They love Him but not with their whole heart.

– They do not love others as much as they love themselves.

– They serve others but there are limits to how far they will go.

– They think about life on earth more than life in heaven.

– They are too comfortable with their luxuries.

– They do the bare minimum.

– They play it safe.

– They feel secure because they attend church.

– They do not live by faith.

– They don’t act much different from the average unbeliever.

Next week chapter five – ‘Serving Leftovers to a Holy God.’ Consider the following questions:

1) Chan writes that many people are more concerned with getting to heaven loving the KIng. What does he mean?

2) When are we most at risk of giving God leftovers?

3) What wouldn’t you be willing to give up for God?

See you Sunday.
