Wednesday Night Recap

Wednesday we discussed Chapters 6 & 7 of  ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ and John 15:7-12.

“Greater love has no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. You are my friends if you do what I command you.”

We discussed the fact that God created us so that we could fellowship with Him and each other. God is love and that love is perfected when it is shared.

Judy reminded us that one of the cruelest forms of punishment is solitary confinement.  Even the cruelest among us needs communion with others. Therefore, it isn’t surprising that Boo reaches out to Jem, Scout and Dill.

We also talked about Jem’s reaction to Boo’s kindness. Jem had done nothing to deserve Boo’s affection. Indeed, Jem, Scout and Dill invented a play that mocked Boo. To the children Boo was little more than a curiosity – like a wild animal in a zoo. Therefore, the grace Jem receives from Boo is an unmerited gift.

Like Jem we receive unmerited grace everyday. The Apostle John wrote – “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whoever believes in Him might be saved.”

We concluded by discussing how we could be more loving to those God places in our orbit. We abide in God’s love as we obey His commands. In other words we love as He loved – sacrificially. This is impossible to do without the power He gave. The Holy Spirit gives us the power to obey. And the Spirit grows in us the more we obey.

See you Wednesday night.
